Craftsman-Style Guesthouse

Craftsman-Style Guesthouse

The ‘Craftsman Style’ is a form of architecture where the structural elements of the building were celebrated. The craftsman were proud of there fine work and chose not to encase the structural elements with excessive trimwork, as done with other building styles. The beams, columns, and connections were left exposed as the form of decoration. This guesthouse follows along with these similar roots. The exterior support columns, roof members, trusses and corbels became the vocabulary for this design. This guesthouse sits above the garages for the main house, allowing commanding views of the surrounding county side. There is an exterior covered porch for dining or just enjoying a glass of wine. The materials and colors for this building reflect the natural surroundings. The lower level is lined with natural stone. The upper horizontal and vertical board siding with its hint of green, blend into the trees. The roof beams, trusses, railing, and trimwork are all painted white, accenting the structure and fine craftsmanship. The interior of this guesthouse has a view to the exterior from the french doors along the covered porch side, flooding the interior with light. At one end of the main room is a living room with a fireplace lined with white cabinetry and a white marble tile surround. At the opposite end of the room is a full kitchen with painted white cabinetry, granite countertops and silver tile backsplash that mimic the stainless steel of the range and refrigerator. There is a large island that separates the two spaces designed for informal dining. This area is a natural gathering space for parties. Behind the kitchen is a bedroom and bathroom.
